Arriving in Germany
A cultural readiness game for skilled migrants
- Client
- Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata
- Year
- 2025 – 2026
- My role
- Game designer
The problem
Skilled migrants moving to Germany often face cultural misunderstandings despite language training, confusion with everyday systems like transport, recycling and etiquette, and anxiety before relocating. Most pre-departure orientation has little hands-on practice.
In the field
- Built the game around Asha, a trained nurse moving to Germany through an international healthcare recruitment programme
- Designed a game loop: encounter a scenario, make a choice, get feedback, retry with a short guidance video if needed
- Wrote everyday scenarios, such as buying and validating a train ticket in Frankfurt and the Pfand bottle deposit at the supermarket
- Created an Adaptability Index that scores how players handle cultural, social and practical situations
- Mentored by Prof. Dr. Sonia Fizek (Cologne Game Lab)
What I made
A 2D game designed to run on low-end hardware, hosted in the cloud with a mobile version planned. It uses stylised maps of real places, everyday simulations, conversations for tricky situations, and feedback that adapts to each player's choices. Future versions could cover other countries and specific workplaces, and include multiplayer and classroom board-game formats.
What changed
- Developed with Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata as part of its Girl Gamers project
- Planned for migration and language institutes, employers recruiting international staff, and universities
Evidence
A trained nurse relocating to Germany: the player's guide through the transition.
Each scenario updates the Adaptability Index, and mistakes unlock short guidance videos.
Arrive in Frankfurt, buy the right ticket and validate it before boarding, or meet the inspector.
The Pfand bottle deposit, the shopping-cart coin and bagging your own groceries.
